R2 is a standard called Responsible Recycling. The R2:2013 Standard is the leading global certification standard for the electronics reuse and recycling industry.  The requirements in the R2 Standard are designed to protect people, protect the environment, protect data, and preserve resources.  This is achieved through rigorous annual 3rd-party audits of R2 certified facilities, and through transparency and accountability throughout the entire reuse/recycling chain of used electronic products (SERI, 2013.)

ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015 is intended for use by an organization seeking to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability (ISO, 2015.)

SERI is Sustainable Electronics Recycling International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing safe and sustainable reuse and recycling of used electronics through consensus-driven standards. It is the housing body and ANSI-accredited Standards Development Organization for the R2 Standard, which means it is the organization directly responsible for its development and maintenance. However, R2 actually predates SERI by several years.

SERI works to create a world where electronic products are reused and recycled in a way that promotes resource preservation; the well-being of the natural environment; and the health and safety of workers and communities (SERI, 2015.)

ISO 9001:2015 is the latest revision of quality management standard. This standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement (ISO,2015.)
